Sony first PlayStation Portable handheld gaming console was announced by E3 in 2003 and first arrived in UK stores in September 2005.
Fast forward four years, bits and Sony has finally released a version of the PSP handheld dropping the unpopular Universal Media Disc (UMD) format in favor of digital downloads through its online store.
PSP Sony had tried to capitalize on the massive popularity of its PlayStation 2, while moving through a new market – and was almost held its number one competitor in the space of a Nintendo game.
And although it’s easy with hindsight to say that the strategy of disorders ‘Nintendo’ with its low cost, dual-touch screen device has proven far more popular than Sony significantly higher and more costly -spec option, the truth is that Sony has still managed to carve out a significant market for itself with the smoother, PSP faster and sexier.
Perhaps the major problem with both the original models of the PSP, and almost all of the various iterations of the Nintendo DS over the past five years (including the update later DSI), was that even if they can properly be described as portable handheld consoles, they can not really be called a true “pocket friendly”.
Until now, because the most immediate benefit of GB Sony PSP is that it is small enough to fit comfortably in the pocket of a loose pair of jeans without too many ‘ an embarrassing bulge.
