ATI Radeon HD 5870

The ATI Radeon HD 5870, the new premium AMD pumper-pixel is really a piece of work.

Not only the graphics card fastest ever, fully capable of grinding Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 in a powdered cellulose powerful.

It is simply the most powerful computer chip; we’ve seen all sorts through the still three teraflops of raw processing power.

Oh, and it happens that give graphics chip first in the world, support for new Microsoft DirectX 11 API.

It is therefore his debut a number of new technologies that may revolutionize the way the two PC games and watch them play.

Somewhere, however, is not quite that, what we had expected. However, it’s not quite what we were expecting. More to the point, not all the surprises are for the good.

To understand why, allow us to transport you to AMD’s recent launch event at a suitably swanky London venue. For the first 20 minutes of the Radeon HD 5000 Series presentation, AMD Home hammered out a strong message. It went like this:

After a decade of hunting ultra-high performance under all circumstances had to move things out of control for the PC graphics industry

Refinement

GPUs are increasingly expressed great. Energy needs, sizes, quantities – everything seemed to be ballooning. Things have reached its peak with the introduction of AMD Radeon HD 2900 Series in summer 2007.

It was a bloated, drying, disaster GPU overheating in large quantities and low cost, but on performance. AMD’s graphics division, ATI, was aboard the sinking rapidly failboat that the graphics chip was codenamed R600.

Well, this is not just, as AMD says, but you get the idea. Something had to change.

Very brave indeed decided to restart AMD, its basic strategy for graphics. He would head over to Nvidia’s competition increasingly desperate to produce the largest and most powerful graphics card.

Instead, it would be to build smaller and cheaper GPU guidance of a maximum retail price of around £ 200. For the really high end, AMD would slap two of these chips on a single card.
Thus, the Radeon HD 3800-series was born. It was a great improvement over the 2900 and delivered a suitable value, but this was not the full manifestation of the new strategy, AMD. It came with the Radeon HD 4800 Series.

ATI renaissance

It was smaller, lighter, more efficient and more elegant than simply colossal chip Nvidia GeForce GTX 280.

The result is that the 4870 Council awarded 90 per cent of the performance of the GTX for about 60 percent of the asking price. He was a winner, in other words.

Central, therefore, the new strategy, AMD offers high performance at affordable price mortals – the place known around £ 150 to £ 200.

This is somewhat surprising, therefore, that the GPU on the basis of the new Radeon HD 5870, the forms are much larger than the Radeon 4870, despite the advantage of a 55nm process shrink to 40nm transistors. Therefore, selling new for 5870 nearly 300 pounds.
